Woodpeckers, nuthatches, brown creepers and other clinging birds brace their stiff tail feathers against a surface below the food for balance - the way they prop against a tree trunk. The tail prop adds that third point of contact, so larger birds like downy, hairy and red-bellied woodpeckers and flickers can perch and feed comfortably instead of fluttering at the cage.
