The massive 'tiger of the woods'. A heavily-set owl with prominent ear tufts and yellow eyes. Apex nocturnal predator across nearly the entire Western Hemisphere; rarely uses enclosed boxes but readily adopts large platforms.
Widespread and abundant; no known immediate threats to the population.
Among the earliest breeders of any North American bird, eggs often laid in January with the female incubating through blizzards.
Apex nocturnal predator with one of the widest prey ranges of any owl, taking everything from voles to skunks to other birds of prey.
Range covers nearly the entire Western Hemisphere from boreal Canada to the southern tip of South America.
